5. Data import, scaling and inverse kinematics (+hands-on)

In this lecture we will go through the key steps needed to import motion data recorded from your lab directly into the OpenSim framework. We will then work with two important tools in OpenSim:

  • the scaling tool
  • the inverse kinematics tool

We will explore different ways of scaling a generic musculoskeletal model as well as the impact this step has on the computation of Musculotendon kinematics and joint angle trajectories. Please, find the lecture slides from the link below:

In the hands-on part of the lecture we will:

1) learn to use the Mokka  platform to visualise the content of motion data stored in C3D file format and import it directly in OpenSim. Please, download the example .c3d file from the link below:

2) preview and sync marker trajectories (stored in .trc files) and ground reaction force data (store in .mot files) from OpenSim. Please, download the example files from the links below:

3) scale the generic "gair2392.osim" opensim model using different techniques and assess the resulting impact of musculotendon length. Please, download the example files:

4) perform inverse kinematics and assess impact of different scaling techniques from step 3:
